R.I.P.: Tom Shinness

Local musician and Harp Guitar virtuoso Tom Shinness passed away last evening after a sudden short illness. A true master at this most unusual instrument, Tom’s music served as a soothing and spiritual healing for his many local fans. Watch Tom play his signature instrument, a 1913 Gibson Harp Guitar.

As nice a man as he was talented, Shinness will be missed by many. A gofundme campaign to cover Tom’s medical expenses is still active and can be used to help support his surviving family.

Tom often graced the stage with local friends like guitarist Phil Keaggy and bluesman Keb’ Mo’. A benefit show starring these two along with Pat Bergeson, Annie Sellick and Jonell Mosser will be held at Third & Lindsley on March 21, 2017.

Here is a photo I took at Tom’s appearance at Franklin’s Kozibean Coffeehouse on December 22, 2005.

  2. Sorry to hear he’s gone, but happy about his destination. Death really is just a change of address when you’ve lived life correctly.

  3. What an extrordinary talent this many was. His music is ethereal. RIP. Tom.
