R.I.P. Kinky Friedman

A priceless photo of Kinky and my son from a long time ago in San Antonio.

Can’t get Kinky off my mind this morning. His final novel, “Ten Little New Yorkers” in 2005, ends with the possibilty that the main character (the author himself) had died. However, at his Bluebird show in 2015, I asked Kinky, and while not specifically addressing the character’s possible demise, he told me that there would be another book forthing coming titled “The Hard-Boiled Hard Drive” which sadly never happened. Maybe he was pulling my leg or maybe there’s an unfinished manuscipt out there somewhere.

I also remember the day that Brian Bodayle and I went searching for Kinky the detective’s fictional apartment on Vandam Street where I imagined him throwing us the key on the puppethead out the window.

Thanks Kinky for your books, your music and your spirit – you meant a lot to me. Here’s the Kinky collection. Time to reread them all!

Finally, Kinky at the Bluebird Cafe in 2015. The last time I got to see the man in person.

I remembered him when I was a 9 year old in 1976 on Saturday Night Live.
